I just know that was the subtext I read. Probably has to do with me and my life experience, somehow. Or maybe the context: "I sent an email but got no answer" "Call and talk to _X_" He has expressed a situation in which someone COULD HAVE been incompetant, in that they didn't get back to him. Could be any number of other reasons, too, but in your replying, Okay, try this instead, you are suggesting that the original way probably won't work, so he shouldn't wait, and he should try another method. The subtext to that is, "Since you sent the email to the company in general and someone there received it but was too incompetant to reply to it, try this different method and ask for a Known Entity." You know, "That didn't work, so try this instead." You could have replied, "Hang in there; they're busy and they'll get back to you." Or, "Try sending another email - maybe the last one fell through the cracks or got waylaid in cyberspace." That wouldn't have suggested the same incompetance on the part of the unknown recipients of company email. Of course I'm now overthinking it, but you asked and I like to think about Why, so there you go. A possibility. :-)
